Our Story

Math Teaching... a shifting paradigm

Any one of us can only teach what we know ourselves.  For most of our teaching force, that translates into the predominantly procedure-oriented approach they themselves learned in school.  Contemporary research, however, underscores a pressing need to shift instruction to a more concept-oriented approach, where the focus is on mathematical ideas which are then embedded in the procedures that follow.  This approach is largely unfamiliar to many teachers, given their own school math experiences.  Teachers need, and want opportunities for substantial professional learning to help them close the gap between what they need to teach and what they are equipped to teach. Researchers around the globe agree that teacher content knowledge is the single, most important contributor to student success.

I Get It! Math represents a dynamic collective of experienced educators (we’ve been around for a while), who share a common passion... to bring high-quality professional learning in mathematics to those who ultimately make the greatest difference... teachers.

Amid the din and clatter of rising expectations and diminishing budgets, a vision was formed of how we could make a difference. We began pooling our experience, ideas (our own and those of countless other teachers), and what we know works. We come to you with almost a century worth of collective wisdom and perspective as teachers, teacher trainers, teacher leaders, curriculum coordinators and administrators.

Thousands of hours later, we present ourselves to you as the I Get It! Math teaching collective, in the hope that you will recognize high-quality, practical professional development in all our work.  Together, we can and will make that difference.
